Woodlawn is a small residential neighborhood in the northern Bronx, bordering the city of Yonkers. The small community of fewer than 8,000 residents is known for its large Irish American population. Katonah Avenue, which runs through the heart of Woodlawn, is popular for its numerous Irish pubs, Irish bakeries and specialty shops. A Catholic church in Woodlawn serves as a center for Irish culture, offering Irish language classes and assistance for Irish immigrants. Woodlawn is also the site of the famous Woodlawn Cemetery. Some famous Jazz players, such as Miles David, Coleman Hawkins or Duke Ellington, are resting in this elegant 400-acre cemetery.
